Moriah,

In theory you can get your license in the US then go to CR and get your license. You do not have to turn in you US license to get a CR license.

Since the legal driving age in CR is 18, I am not sure if they will allow you to get your license in CR at 16. It will be up to the people at the MOPT as to whether or not they are having a good day. It might be worth a try but I wouldn’t count on it too much.

I also wouldn’t recommend it as, in case you haven’t noticed, CR driving is not for new drivers but for those that have a little experience under their belt. I would not let my own daughter (who is also American) drive in CR at 16. You really need more driving experience to be able to handle these crazy motorcycles and buses, not to mention the idiot racing cars.

Take your time. You have your whole life to drive. Don’t get in a hurry. This is your life we are talking about. Safety first!!

Hi I'm 16 and American, I would like to know if it is legal to go back to my hometown in California and get my license then come back to Costa Rica and be able to use it here? Or would i need to trade my American license in for a Costa Rican one?
Or is that illegal for my age here even if I have an American license?
